This township originated in 1845 when British occupied Natal in force and established a number of native locations for the Zulus. It is a fine venue for anyone interested in experience township life, and offers shebeens, domestic lifestyles, nyanga's shops, artwork and jazz. The township is what South Africa is, it is the pulse, the heartbeat of the country, the country that was built on the back of the people. Umlazi is representatives of this. Originally discovered by King Shaka and his men and named Umlazi because when Shaka tasted the water it was "um lasa" (like Sour Milk)
